Open Concept Kitchen Renovation

The homeowners of this bungalow desired a reconfigured layout of the kitchen, dining and living areas to create an open concept and more functional kitchen and dining space. A structural engineer was involved with the project to design a new structure of support beams and posts that were installed in place of three load bearing walls that were removed. Re-configuring the kitchen layout and removing walls also required relocating HVAC systems.

Custom cabinetry is European style frameless melamine boxes in premium hard rock maple, doors and drawer fronts are slab finished in UV lacquer high gloss. Slab style riser moldings are installed to the ceiling.

The focal point of the kitchen is the custom island in hickory in medium brown stain, with quartzite countertop and a butcher block raised bar. Custom butcher block countertops are flat-grain Sapele mahogany with Durata permanent waterproof satin finish. The countertop beside the kitchen sink features a drain board. Backpainted glass back splash is installed in kitchen sink area and eating bar area.

A beautiful cooktop and downdraft ventilation system is built into the island. A warming drawer was installed in the island conveniently located near the cooktop. The large island features open shelving on both ends, providing ample storage area for cookbooks and kitchen accessories.

The large windows provide ample light, and a custom built bench with storage provides convenient additional seating in the kitchen, and a perfect spot to relax with a view. Floating shelves installed above the bench seating area feature undermount lighting and provide a perfect spot to display photos and decor.

Flooring is handscraped hickory hardwood finished in a pearl sheen, installed throughout the main floor for continuity of finishes through the home. A new direct vent gas insert fireplace was retrofitted to the existing fireplace.
